Trucking LMIA in Brampton 2026: New Rules, Requirements & What to Expect

Brampton is a major city for Canada’s trucking industry. Many carriers still look abroad when they cannot find enough qualified drivers. In 2026, however, the LMIA process requires more care. Wage rules, employer checks, recruitment duties, and local labour conditions can all affect an application.

For foreign drivers, the job offer is only the starting point. The employer must qualify, the position must meet the current rules, and the driver must later satisfy IRCC before receiving a work permit.

What Has Changed for Trucking LMIA Applications in 2026?

Transport truck drivers fall under NOC 73300. The occupation remains eligible for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, but employers must meet the rules that apply to their wage stream.

The biggest point to watch in Ontario is the wage threshold.

For LMIA applications received from July 17, 2026, the Ontario threshold for the high-wage stream is $36.92 per hour. An offer below that amount generally falls under the low-wage stream. Employers must also offer a wage that fits the prevailing rate for the occupation and location. Simply raising the wage to cross the threshold does not automatically solve the other requirements.

This distinction is important in Brampton because low-wage positions face additional restrictions in large urban areas.

Why Brampton Makes the Process More Important

Brampton falls within the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area. That matters under the current low-wage LMIA rules.

Canada can refuse to process certain low-wage LMIA applications when the unemployment rate in the relevant census metropolitan area reaches 6% or higher. Employers should therefore check the rate that applies when they submit their application.

This does not mean every trucking position in Brampton faces the same result.

The wage stream, job details, employer situation, and current labour market conditions all matter. A position that qualifies under the high-wage stream follows a different set of rules from a low-wage position.

Employers should also remember that trucking applications receive specific scrutiny. Service Canada requires trucking employers to provide a current carrier profile or public profile report. They may also ask for a National Safety Code certificate and fleet insurance with every trucking LMIA application.

What Does the Employer Need to Show?

The employer carries much of the responsibility. Service Canada must be satisfied that the business is genuine, that the job fits the real needs of the business, and that the employer can meet the terms of the offer.

For a trucking company, the file should tell a clear story about its operations and hiring need.

The employer should be ready to support areas such as:

Business operations and financial ability

  • The number and type of trucks in the fleet
  • The actual need for additional drivers
  • Recruitment efforts made in Canada
  • The offered wage and working conditions
  • The job duties and work location
  • Required transportation and employment arrangements

Recruitment also matters. The employer must make reasonable efforts to find Canadian citizens and permanent residents before turning to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The required advertising depends on the LMIA stream and the position.

A weak recruitment record can create problems even when a company has a genuine driver shortage.

What Does a Foreign Truck Driver Need?

The driver does not apply for the LMIA. The Canadian employer applies for it.

After a positive LMIA, the driver can apply for an employer-specific work permit. The application normally includes the positive LMIA and file number, employment contract, and job offer letter.

The driver’s own documents also need to support the application.

This can include:

  • A current passport
  • A detailed résumé
  • Proof of previous driving experience
  • Employment reference letters
  • Documents showing relevant qualifications
  • Any required medical or police documents
  • Other documents requested by IRCC

Experience needs to be genuine and easy to verify. If the job requires particular driving experience, the applicant should show that experience through clear employment records.

The job offer should also match the driver’s background. A mismatch between the claimed experience and the position can raise questions during the work permit process.

What Happens After the LMIA Is Approved?

A positive LMIA does not give the driver permission to work in Canada.

The employer provides the LMIA documents to the worker. The worker then applies to IRCC for an employer-specific work permit. The work permit application has its own requirements, and IRCC must be satisfied that the applicant meets them.

The permit normally ties the worker to the employer and job listed in the application. A driver should not assume that an LMIA allows them to freely change trucking companies.

What Should Drivers and Employers Expect in 2026?

The trucking LMIA route has not disappeared. The process has become more detailed, and the margin for mistakes is smaller.

For employers, the first step should be checking the correct wage stream and current rules. They should then prepare the business, recruitment, trucking, and job documents before submitting the LMIA.

For drivers, the focus should be on finding a genuine employer and making sure the job offer matches their experience.
