Express Entry is a federal system that manages permanent residence applications for skilled workers. The government launched it in 2015 to fill labour gaps in the Canadian job market. It runs three programs under one system: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Every candidate builds a profile online and gets ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System, or CRS. Points come from age, education, work experience, and language test scores. Candidates with the highest scores get invited first.
Provinces also use the pool to fill local labour shortages through the Provincial Nominee Program. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score, which almost guarantees an invitation in the next round.
Go online and fill in your details. You’ll need your language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF for French), your education credential assessment if you studied outside Canada, and your work history.
If your profile meets the minimum requirements for one of the three programs, it enters the Express Entry pool.
IRCC ranks every profile by CRS score. Draws happen roughly every two weeks. Some draws invite candidates from the entire pool, called general draws, and these usually need a higher score.
Some draws target a specific occupation or French-language ability, called category-based draws, and these often accept lower scores. Your best chance depends on which draw fits your profile, not just your raw CRS number.
If you get an Invitation to Apply, you have 60 days to submit your complete application, along with medical exams, police certificates, and proof of funds where required.
Most complete files get processed within six months. If you don’t receive an ITA, your profile stays active in the pool for one year and you can update it anytime to raise your score.
Express Entry isn’t one single program. It’s a system that manages three separate streams, and each one has its own eligibility rules. Getting into the wrong stream, or missing a small requirement, is one of the most common reasons applications get delayed. Here’s what each stream actually needs.
This program is created for candidates with strong education and work experience, even without a Canadian job offer. You need at least one year of continuous, full-time skilled work experience in the last ten years. You need a Canadian Language Benchmark of 7 or higher, and a completed diploma, degree, or Canadian secondary or post-secondary credential. Proof of funds is mandatory unless you hold a valid job offer.
This program is for tradespeople such as electricians, welders, plumbers, and chefs. You need at least two years of full-time trade experience in the last five years. Your language requirement is slightly lower than FSW: CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing. You also need a valid job offer of at least one year, or a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian province or territory.
Built for candidates already working in Canada. You need at least one year of skilled work experience gained in Canada within the last three years, under a valid work permit. Language requirements depend on the job’s skill level. CLB 7 for managerial and professional roles, CLB 5 for technical and skilled trade roles. Proof of funds is not required under this stream.
IRCC updated its category-based draws this year. Several new categories joined the list this year. Physicians with Canadian work experience now qualify. So do researchers, senior managers, and transport occupations. Skilled military recruits also joined the list.
The work experience requirement changed as well. Renewed categories now need one year of experience, up from six months. Cooks no longer qualify under the trade occupations category. If you work in this field, check your eligibility again before you apply.
French-language draws continued to perform well this year. Cut-off scores stayed lower than general draws, and some rounds dropped below 400.
If you have any French ability, even at a basic level, it’s worth checking your score. This route may work in your favour.
How long does Express Entry take from profile to permanent residence?
Once you get an ITA, you have 60 days to submit your application. Most complete files get processed within six months after that.
How long does my profile stay in the pool?
Twelve months. If you don’t get an ITA in that time, you can submit a new profile and rejoin the pool.
How much money do I need to show for proof of funds?
This changes yearly and depends on your family size. As a rough guide, a single applicant needs roughly CAD $14,000 to $15,000, and the amount rises with each additional family member. Canadian Experience Class applicants and candidates with a valid job offer are exempt. Can I bring my spouse and children?
Yes. Declare them upfront in your profile, even if they plan to join you later or already hold Canadian status.
